Cloud Burst and Flash Flood in Itanagar Claims Three Lives

The havoc created by the flash floods in the north-0eastern states have not come to end yet and this time, a cloudburst added more disaster to that in Arunachal Pradesh. The unexpected cloudburst and then the incessant rain to create the flash flood took three lives in the hilly state with two other persons missing from the state capital.

Rescue operations are on full speed in search of the missing persons and in the meantime, two other persons are rescued and are undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Of the three dead in the flash floods, the body of the minor boy was retrieved from the Papu Nallah area, the body of the second person was found in the Nirjulil area and the third person was a woman who is recovered from the Donyi Polo area. The woman was however rescued alive with multiple fractures who later breathed her last at the RK Mission Hospital at Itanagar.

The flash flood further washed away twenty-six houses and sixty other houses were fully or partially damaged. The particular areas that are most affected due to the flood waters are Modirijo, the Donyi Polo area, Chandra Nagar, Lobi, GSS Police colony and Press colony.

The damages caused by the sudden flash flood are more than what can be anticipated. The nameable ruins caused by the flash flood include completely washing away the approach road to Modirijo and damaging half of a culvert in the Donyi polo area. In fact, some of the cars and bikes were also swept away by the floods.

This sudden loss of lives and wealth of the state capital area has saddened the Chief Minister of the state as well who as an immediate relief to the damages, has announced the immediate release of ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the deceased’s family. The CM also passes on prayers for the injured people for their swift recovery.

Pema Khandu further assures total support and help at this time of distress and directed the district administration and the disaster management department to monitor the situation.
