ROING: Commissioner for Home & Agriculture Production, Rajiv Verma has instructed the officials to go for the early destruction of cannabis plants in the district to control drug addiction. He also called for a push in the Agri-Horti sector through implementation of 'Krishi' schemes and right beneficiary selection so that benefits reach the true needy farmers.

The Commissioner made these observations during his tour to the Lower Dibang Valley (LDV) district visited Research Institute of World's Ancient Traditions Cultures and Heritage (RIWATCH) museum and historical site of Bhismaknagar on Saturday.

Verma appreciated the efforts of RIWATCH in preserving the culture of the state through the museum. Also appreciating the historical significance of the Bhismaknagar site, Verma said that it has the potential to be developed as a tourism hotspot, which will benefit the local economy. Later, the Commissioner met with the Deputy Commissioner K.N. Damo, SP J. K. Lego and other heads of departments. The commissioner discussed the issue of drug addiction and Agri-Horti prospects of the district.

Meanwhile, the DC urged the commissioner to provide funds for clearing of pending Urban Town Planning (UTP) bills amounting to approximately Rs 70 lakh, through a memorandum submitted by him. He also urged the government to pursue the Archaeological Survey of India for proper maintenance of the historical site at Bhismaknagar. Earlier, a progressive farmer from the district -- Dature Muili interacted with the Commissioner and appraised him about the prospects and problems of oil palm cultivation and tea plantation in the district. He informed about the need for use of chemicals like urea in the cultivation process and requested the government to allow its limited use.
