ITANAGAR: East Siang district Deputy Commissioner (DC) Tayi Taggu on Thursday planted a sapling (Pongamia Pinnata) in the premises of the Rayang Military Station under Ruksin sub-division to mark a plantation drive.

The plantation drive was organized by the Siang Brigade of Indian Army under Green Envelope initiative, commemorating Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsava.

More than 5,000 ornamental, shady and fruit bearing trees were planted as part of the green initiative.

Siang Brigade Commander, DFO (Territory), Tashi Mize, Range Forest Officer of Jonai forest range, Mukut Rabha, also joined the plantation drive among others. The DC on the occasion urged every member of the society to plant more tree for greenery, protection of the environment and to combat climate change.

The DC also lauded the efforts put in by the armed forces in rebuilding forest area.

The Commander said that the plantation drive by adopting the Miyawaki method for micro forest in the area is bound to enhance forest cover and help rebuild brighter tomorrow for the future generations.

DFO Tashi Mize informed that under the pre-celebration of Vanamahotsav 2022, 10,000 saplings consisting of fruit bearing species have so far been distributed from the office of the Divisional Forest Office (Territory), Pasighat.

It may be mentioned that Green Envelope initiative include phase-wise plantation of trees over a period of time to enhance green cover in the area. It involves plantation of large number of native trees in a smaller area, based on micro-forest being developed by plantation, based on Miyawaki technique pioneered by Japanese Botanist Akira Miyawaki.

The initiative is also an example of civil-military liaison for overall development of the society, an official communiqué informed here.
