East Siang district hit by flash floods, landslides triggered by incessant rain

ITANAGAR: A report from East Siang district informed that landslides and flash floods triggered by incessant rain for the last couple of days left a trail of large-scale devastation in the district.

Communication along the Mirem-Mikong-Ruksin Road under Ruksin sub-division of the district has been disrupted after a 30-feet approach road to the bridge over Sile River was washed away again within a month.

Two stranded persons at Sibo Korong River near Pasighat on Thursday were rescued by a police team along with a team of the Fire & Emergency Services under the supervision of East Siang Superintendent of Police, the report said. The married couple had ventured into the river which flooded due to heavy rain, the report said, adding that all necessary medical attention has been given to the victims.

Several pockets of Pasighat, the district headquarters of East Siang, are battling with a flood-like situation with low-lying areas, like Sibo Korong, confluence point of Siang, Komlighat and Raneghat got inundated. The situation in Mebo sub-division also remained grim.

The Siang River and all its tributaries are reported to be following above the danger mark at some points for which district administration has issued advisories to the people to stay away from venturing in the rivers.

As a precautionary measure, East Siang Deputy Commissioner Dr Kinny Singh has asked the people residing in low-lying areas adjacent to the river to be careful and closely monitor every development. She further cautioned people against boating or fishing in the river. According to information received from Lohit and Namsai districts, all the major rivers and their tributaries are in high spate.
