A Correspondent

ITANAGAR: The Department of Public Health Engineering & Water Supply on Friday declared the office premises of Chief Engineer (Western Zone), Mission Director (SBM-G) and EE Mechanical Office, Senki Park, Division-IV as ‘Plastic Free Zone’.

In a joint sitting of the Chief Engineer (W/Z), PHE & WS Department, and Mission Director, SBM (G) with the officials of the department, the decision to ban single use plastic products was taken as these items release toxic chemicals into the atmosphere.

It was informed to the officials and the staffs present that single-use plastic items leach out and pollute our soil, water and environment. Exposure to them is linked to cancer, birth defects, impaired immunity, endocrine disruption and other ailments. Burning of plastic items also emit a group of highly toxic chemicals which are hazardous to human and other organisms.

The department has restricted the use plastic carry bags, plastic bottles, plastic cups/glass, etc., and offenders will be slapped with financial penalty. In this regard, an appeal was also made to all government offices to follow suit and declare their respective office premises ‘Plastic Free Zone’ in order to protect mother nature.
