Itanagar: Much to the delight of the State, the first lady commissioned officer of the Army, Major Ponung Doming has been elevated to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel on Monday.
She is presently posted at Pune.
Born to Olom Doming and Jimmi Dai Doming of Pasighat, Ponung pursued her studies from Daying Ering Government Higher Secondary School and the IGJ Government Higher Secondary School, both in Pasighat. She was the topper among tribal students in Class XII.
Ponung, who did her graduation in civil engineering from Walchand College of Engineering in Maharashtra, was commissioned into the Army as a Lieutenant in 2008. Four and half years later, she was promoted to the rank of Major.
She had served in the United Nations Peace Keeping Force Mission in April 2014 in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
A very down to earth by nature, Ponung is an inspiration for many today.
Asked if she has any advice for the younger generation, especially girls who intend to join army, she said, “My advice to young aspirants of our home state and the region is dream big and above all, have the courage to achieve or fulfill that.”
“I will consider myself blessed if I am able to inspire even a single person to do whatever little we can do for our country,” she added.
