NEW DELHI: In a bid to ensure proper road communication for the public of the region as well as for the military personnel deployed on the Indo-China border, the Indian government has sanctioned the creation of a major highway project in the northeastern region of the country.

The proposed 'Frontier Highway' will cover a total of 1748 km distance. The two-lane road will run very close to the international border at several positions of the route. It will start at Bomdila in Western Arunachal Pradesh and run across its length to end in Vijaynagar in the Eastern side. It will pass through several strategic points on the Tibet border including Nafra, Huri and Monigaon. Jido and Chenquenty points on the China border will also be on the route while Vijaynagar is on the Myanmar Border.

Designated NH 913, this road will be able to provide seamless road connectivity to the border regions on the eastern fronts of the country. Once completed, defence personnel and equipment will be easily transported to the border points at a moment's notice from several key installations in Assam. It will also increase the patrolling capacities of the Indian forces.

This step holds special significance after repeated violations by the Chinese army on the international border, the latest of which is in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh. The clash along the Line of Actual Control in Tawang on December 9 evoked a strong reaction from the armed forces of India.

This new highway project will also put a stop to the attempts of infiltration in these regions of the country. According to reports, about 800 km out of the total 1748 km will be a completely new road. The project will involve the creation of tunnels, and the clearing of forest land and will involve an expenditure of about Rs 27000 Cr. The project will be divided into 9 projects and all of them are expected to be completed by 2026-27.
