Itanagar: Itanagar police on Friday recovered the body of a lady from the Dikrong river bank, opposite to Orchid factory near Dikrong Bridge at Nirjuli, near here, police said. The lady, a former gram chairperson, has been identified as the wife of Bagi Tabin, a private security guard at North East Regional Institute of Science & Technology (NERIST), was suspected to be raped before being murdered, Capital SP Tume Amo informed.

He, however, declined to divulge the name and age of the deceased.

A case of murder and rape has been registered at Nirjuli police station, the SP informed adding, “the decease hails from Begya Village under Pipsorang circle of Kra Daadi district. She was the mother of five daughters and two sons.”

The SP added that on getting information, a team led by Nirjuli police station officer in-charge Inspector T Habung and assistant sub-inspector K Tacha rushed to the spot and launched an investigation.

Photographs of the crime scene were taken and thoroughly searched in the presence of the local magistrate. Police recovered one wrist watch, an empty wallet and a pair of footwear from the spot. However, the cell phone of the victim was missing.

The SP added that according to the statement of the deceased daughter, the lady on Thursday visited one of her friend Bengia Yapi at Dikrong Colony. Since then she did not return home. She did not even pick up their calls since Thursday evening.

The body was later taken to Rama Krishna Mission Hospital here and the post-mortem would be conducted on Saturday at Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), Amo said.

“Though rape is only suspected, it will be confirmed only after the post-mortem. As of now all possible angles are being investigated to ascertain the facts,” the SP added.
