Guwahati: A 2-year-old girl was killed on Thursday after a deluge of mud triggered by unceasing rains descended on Donyi Colony near Ganga Market in Arunachal Pradesh's Itanagar. Although police personnel rescued the minor's 5-year-old brother from the thick of the debris, the girl passed away after sustaining grievous injuries.

After the landslide was triggered in at 8:12 am in the morning, police and paramilitary personnel were called into action to rescue people stuck in the debris. After the strong effort, the team succeeded in digging out the girl and rushed her to the RK Mission Hospital. However, doctors declared her brought dead, informed Superintendent of Police of Itanagar, Tumme Amo.

"Police reached the spot and rescued a 5-year-old boy. However, the 2-year-old minor, his sister, was tragically killed in the landslide. Although she was rushed to the R K Mission Hospital, she was pronounced dead on arrival. We later came to know that the father of the two children was not at home. It has been raining for a while now, and the house, a tall structure made of bamboo, had been constructed right at the base of a slope. All legal formalities are being completed now", Amo further elaborated.

Taking stock of the situation, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said that an ex-gratia amount is being allotted for the next of kin of the deceased girl.

"Deeply shocked over the loss of a minor's life at Doni Colony, Itanagar due to landslide this morning caused by incessant rain. My condolences to grieving family members. Necessary ex-gratia relief is being extended to next of the kin. I appeal all to stay safe and be vigilant", Khandu tweeted.
