TEZPUR: Rajnath Singh, Minister of Defence carried out the last blast of 1555 m- long Sela Main Tunnel (T2) through e-ceremony in West Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh on October 14.

It is a momentous occasion for the Nation and the BRO as the prestigious 'Sela Tunnel Project' which is the lifeline of Tawang has achieved the breakthrough of the main tube of the longer tunnel marking the end of its excavation.

The foundation stone of the project was laid by the Prime Minister in 2019 and within two years the longer tunnel having length more than 1.5 km length has already been excavated.

This tunnel will be the longest bi-lane tunnel in the world at an altitude above 13000 ft which will be another jewel in India's crown, BRO officials said.

The second tunnel (T1) of 980 m length of Sela Tunnel Project which was started only this year has also crossed the 700 m mark. BRO has achieved more than 8 m of excavation in one tube in a day which is a record in itself. BRO has been setting unparalleled examples of infrastructural marvels in the most difficult areas of the nation under the leadership of Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry, VSM DG Border Roads.

With this breakthrough, the BRO will accelerate the project even further to achieve the stipulated timelines. Karmyogis of BRO have worked tirelessly to achieve this breakthrough today and are endeavouring to progress even faster now.

'Project Vartak' is setting unprecedented standards of pace of tunnel construction in the Himalayas. The BRO has also achieved 300 m of excavation of the 500 m-long Nechiphu tunnel. The first 100m in 73 days, the second 100 m in a swift 42 days and the third 100 m now achieved in just 31 days, a mark achieved at breakneck speeds cutting through the foggiest stretch on Balipara-Charduar-Tawang Road in West Arunachal Pradesh.

BRO under the able guidance of Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry, VSM has done yeomen service in connecting Tawang through the Balipara Charduar Axis and efforts of Project Vartak to improve it now with Sela and Nechiphu Tunnels will offer a strategic and commercial edge to the Nation, added BRO officials.
