Media literacy campaign for school students held in Doimukh

DOIMUKH: In first of its kind approach, school children of Don Bosco School, Nonpu were given awareness on Media Literacy at its school compound on Saturday. The month-long Media Literacy Campaign (MLC) is an initiatory step taken by the Department of Mass Communication, Rajiv Gandhi University in collaboration with state news daily, ‘The Arunachal Times’ to apprise the school children about the significance of media education, trustworthiness in consuming media, media in the realm of Digital age, media usage and diversity in media.

A drama on the recent mob lynching of 2 Assamese youths at Karbi Anglong due to suspicions developed through WhatsApp news forward was enacted by the Mass Communication students to create awareness among the children not to be easily carried away by fake media messages.

Other events that marked the day were: a media quiz competition, display of short film ‘Overdose’ and interactive games to enlighten the students about the do’s and don’ts when it comes to the uses of media and its gratification.

The effort is to teach the young minds how to use media for constructive purposes, otherwise it will affect them morally, mentally and also emotionally, said Prof Khabi, HoD of Mass Communication Dep’t, RGU. He informed that the next MLC will be held on November 9 at VKV School, Bage Tinali.

The principal of the school, Father Linson Lius thanked the department for organizing the program and educating his students. He hoped that the knowledge imparted will help the students develop awareness on media and its viable functions.
