NIRJULI: Minister of Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary, Dairy Development Tage Taki inaugurated the Krishi Mela organized by the All India Coordinated Research Project on Ergonomics and Safety in Agriculture at NERIST on Friday.

Around 130 farmers participated in the mela. The main theme of the event was to provide an opportunity for the farmers to adopt and practice advance tools and machinery which are feasible in the region.

Taki while emphasizing the role of farmers in nation-building, urged the farmers to help in this cause. He said that the youth of this generation are reluctant to take up farming as a profession because their expectations are very high.

“If the income of the farmers is increased then definitely, the youths may take up farming as a profession,” he added.

He also informed that the youths from IT sectors are coming back to the agricultural sector as all other sectors can get saturated in the near future. The minister emphasized that doubling farmers' income by 2024 may be achieved if the farmers take up fishery and piggery along with agriculture and horticulture.

“However, the major bottleneck is the cost of the feed for the fisheries and piggery,” he said.

Also speaking on the day, Director NERIST HS Yadav pointed out that farmers should feel proud that they are feeding the nation. He also informed that NERIST is going to start plans to reach out to farmers in every district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Yadav also confirmed that the institute is in the process to develop the Technology Facility Center (TFC), where the farmers from the State and nearby villages in Assam will be called on to reap the benefits of the research done in the Department of Agricultural Engineering.
