Mock drill on earthquake at NIT campus held

DOIMUKH: A team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) 12th BN, “E” company stationed at Itanagar on Wednesday conducted a mock exercise on earthquake at NIT campus, Yupia here followed by an exhibition laying the modern disaster rescue equipment held with NDRF.

Director NIT-Arunachal Pradesh, Prof. Pinakeswar Mahanta while appreciating the NDRF team for organizing such awareness programmes briefed all students and staff about earthquake, as well as the “dos and don’ts during earthquakes”. “After learning of the precautions that should be taken before earthquakes and of actions after earthquakes, one should also educate the other peoples of what we have learnt today here,” he said.

Further the director wished that the such a mock exercise will be very helpful for the students and staff of NIT, Yupia to mitigate the earthquake hazards as well as learn the responding techniques during disasters situations. The 12th BN NDRF, Doimukh has been conducting such mock exercises and awareness programmes for disaster management in its area of responsibility like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland to make the public aware about various disasters and how to respond during such situation since many years.

The mock exercise on earthquake was carried out by creating a typical scenario in which six victims were trapped in a collapsed building after a devastating earthquake.

The trapped victims were then rescued by NDRF rescuers with the help of modern equipment and techniques. First aid was given to the injured victims.

The NDRF team was led by Inspector Vivek Kumar along with two other officers and 28 others totalling 31 under the supervision of Dr Abir Chowdhary Second-In-Command, Medical, P. Nupajao. Singh, Deputy Commandant and Sanjay Prasad Sharma, Assistant Commandant, 12TH BN NDRF.
