MP Ering announces Rs 5 lakh for erosion-hit Mebo

GUWAHATI: Arunachal East Lok Sabha MP Ninong Ering on Friday announced a sum of Rs five lakhs for the anti-erosion measure while visiting the erosion-hit sites at Mebo sub-division in East Siang district and took stock of the alarming situation posed by Siang River on its left bank.

Ering visited affected Borguli, Serum, Namsing and Mer villages under Mebo sub-division and assured the victim families of taking rehabilitation measures. He also inspected the protection work at Borguli portions, where the village women are carrying out protective embankment by filling sand in plastic bags.

Notably, erosion posed by Siang River rendered 10 families homeless at Serum village last month, while it has gripped several acres of fertile cropland in downstream areas. Moreover, surging water of the river also flooded low lying villages like Namsing and Mer-Gadum.

While interacting with the villagers of Mebo, Ering assured to write about the situation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking central assistance for implementing anti-erosion project at Siang. He also expressed necessity of dredging the riverbed, which is gradually rising after it becomes turbid last year.

“Rough riverbed due to massive siltation on both banks made the river turbulent and causing soil erosion on its banks. It needs modern technology to excavate the river bed and control the water flow at Siang”, Ering observed.
