NERIST organizes farm technology mela at Tidgo Village

Itanagar: A day-long awareness-cum-demonstration mela on "Farm Technology" was organized at Tidgo Village in Papum Pare district on Friday.

The mela was jointly organized by the All India Coordinated Research project (AICRP) on Ergonomics and safety in Agriculture (ESA) operative in the agriculture department of North East Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) here and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) of the institute.

The main objective of the event was to show various improved technologies to the farmers to enhance their income and develop linkage among farmers and education, research institute, a press release informed.

Principal investigator of AICRP on ESA Prof K N Dewangan stressed on the need of adoption of best working posture for minimizing the work-related musculo-skeletal disorders (WMSDs).

NERIST UBA Regional Coordinator Prof P Lingfa in his deliberation, emphasized on the role of UBA and how it could be linked to farmers in nation building.

Junior Project Officer Surya Chhetry dwelt on ergonomic improved hand tools and equipment that are feasible in the region.

In the mela, the agricultural engineering department and AICRP on ESA demonstrated improved hand tools and machinery for paddy cultivation, ladders for harvesting of fruits, remote controlled power tiller, safety gadgets for dao and sickle, improved backpack for load carrying and maize sheller.

Jam preparation from orange and apple was also demonstrated by food technology expert A K Choudhary, Assistant Professor from NERIST.

At the end of the mela, improved NERIST sickles were distributed to all participants to experience the benefits of improved hand tools and technology.

The mela was sponsored by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) through All India Coordinated Research Project on Ergonomics and Safety in Agriculture, NERIST Centre and the union Ministry of Human Resource Development, through UBA NERIST Cell, the release added.
