GUWAHATI: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday said that Northeast India is being rapidly integrated into the national mainstream in a special session of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
He underlined the impressive progress in infrastructure, economic potential, and tourism in the region, making it increasingly important to India's unity and prosperity.
Dhankhar noted that the Northeast now boasts 17 airports, 20 waterways, and extensive digital connectivity, making it a vital part of India's development story. He attributed this transformation to deliberate policies and strategic investments aimed at harnessing the region's potential.
Praising the Northeast's natural and organic farming practices, Dhankhar described them as an example for other states. He also pointed out the vast market opportunities presented by indigenous resources like bamboo, rubber, and silk. "These resources can not only boost local economies but also position the region as a key player in national and global markets," he said.
Heaping praises on the pristine beauty and the vibrant tribal culture of the Northeast, he described it as a global destination in its own right. "This region is a paradise for tourists," he added and also informed that 1.19 crore people came here last year to savor the rich natural and cultural wealth of this region.
Reflecting on India's foreign policy, Dhankhar explained how the Act East Policy builds on the earlier Look East Policy to foster deeper connections with Southeast Asia while transforming ground realities in the Northeast. "This policy is a game-changer for regional development," he remarked.
As the Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar voiced his concern regarding the disruption of legislative business and called upon political parties to maintain national unity and democratic values. "Nation comes first, and unity is paramount," he said and called for greater accountability to constitutional values.
He emphasized the need for "vocal for local," encouraging citizens to prefer domestic products to create employment, save foreign exchange, and promote entrepreneurship. He further highlighted how digital governance has curtailed corruption and improved transparency. "Technology ensures that benefits reach people directly, seamlessly, and without intermediaries," he said.
Dhankhar also underscored the importance of observing Constitution Day and remembering the Emergency period as a reminder of the value of democracy and justice. Reflecting on those challenging 21 months, he said, “It is crucial to stay vigilant against any threats to our democratic ethos.”
In his concluding address, the Vice President renewed his call for national unity. "We are one, not because we speak the same language, but because we are part of this great nation," he said. The session saw the addresses of Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen (Retd) KT Parnaik, Chief Minister Pema Khandu, and Assembly Speaker Team Pongte, all underlining the importance of the state in India's growth.
