Itanagar: A person from Sadiya in Assam’s Tinsukia district who was allegedly working as a spy of Pakistan intelligence agencies, was arrested at Dichu in Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh, top Army sources informed on Wednesday.

The man identified as Nirmal Rai, son of Tej Bahadur Rai of Ambikapur in Sadiya was arrested on January 6 by army personnel and handed over to Arunachal Pradesh police the next day.

Rai was working as an army porter at Kibithu and Dichu, the last border post along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the sources said. State DGP S B K Singh when contacted admitted the arrest and said that joint interrogation of the person by various intelligence and security agencies is going on. He, however, refused to divulge the details saying that police cannot comment anything unless concrete details are available.

Rai who belongs to Nepali community, was working at Dubai in a burger shop from April 2016 to April 2018 before reaching Kibithu.

Rai was being watched by Army intelligence for over a month after being reported of his suspicious behaviour, the Army sources informed and added that he was arrested by police under the provisions of Official Secrets Act, section 120B of the IPC and section 72 of the IT Act. A smart phone has been seized from the possession of the arrested person.

The Army sources further revealed that Rai was involved in passing on sensitive information on locations and deployment of army units, weapon profile of army units and deployment of artillery guns at Kibithu, locations of Advanced Landing Ground, helipads and helicopters, bridges and infrastructure development along the LAC among others. Rai was allegedly recruited by a Dubai-based handler of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) when he was working in the burger shop and he was trained and later sent to Arunachal Pradesh to work as porter of the Army, the sources added.
