PPA announces candidate for Lumla bye-poll in Arunachal

ITANAGAR: The People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) on Tuesday announced its candidate for the bye-election to Lumla constituency in the Tawang district, scheduled to be held on February 27 this year.
PPA secretary general Kaling Jerang during a press conference, while announcing the name of Leki Norbu as the party candidate for the bye-poll, informed that the lone regional party of the state would fight the election on issues like corruption and nepotism against the ruling government.
"PPA will provide a good government if voted to power in the next assembly elections, due next year. By launching our candidate for the bye-election, we have started our process for the assembly poll where we will field as many as candidates in the 60 constituencies of the state," he said. Jerang added that the bye-election is an opportunity for the people to elect a good leader for Lumla constituency, being deprived from development since last several years, and people should give the party a fair chance. Norbu, who is a former gaon burah (village headman), alleged that the constituency has not witnessed any development since last several years and fund meant for development were being siphoned off. "The constituency did not witness any development despite huge amount of fund being pumped in by the government, which never reached the real needy," he alleged.
Responding to a question regarding ruling BJP's candidate, as the saffron party is likely to field Tsering Lhamu, wife of sitting MLA Jambey Tashi who died recently, as the consensus candidate, PPA president Kahfa Bengia said that the party has sympathy on the family members of Tashi, but decided to contest the bye-poll so that a good leader could be elected. Though ruling BJP is yet to officially announce the name of its candidate for the bye-poll, however, party sources informed that the saffron party is likely to field Lhamu as the consensus candidate and discussions are going on with other parties on the matter.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on January 18 announced bye-election to the seat, which fall vacant after sitting BJP MLA Jambey Tashi died on November last year at the age of 48.
