ITANAGAR: A pre-marital counselling committee has been formed for the first time in Arunachal Pradesh by the Shi-Yomi district administration. The committee was constituted for providing a voluntary counselling session for young couples intending to enter into matrimony during a meeting chaired by Shi-Yomi deputy commissioner Liyi Bagra at Tato on Thursday.
Reasoning about the need for the committee, Bagra said due rapid modernisation instances of marital disputes and breakdowns are increasing in society.
He said there is also a rise in cases of inter-tribe and inter-faith marriages today which necessitates equipping the young couple with familiarity about each other’s traditions and customs, he said. The DC also said that early matrimonial alliances prevalent in our state come with risk of being oblivious to the nuances of a married life leading to unhealthy relationships.
The establishment of PMCC can help in promoting awareness about the partner’s needs, rights and duties, address cultural differences as well as improve communication between the partners for ensuring an enduring matrimonial life, Bagra said. He also highlighted the need to counsel the teens and adolescents regarding the peril of underage marriage and directed the committee to sensitize the youths through school visits, public meetings, etc.
The voluntary counselling sessions can help in establishing a healthy marriage with respect for one’s partner’s customs, traditions, belief, etc., thereby facilitating smooth adjustment post marriage.
The committee will also work towards ensuring enhanced communication between partners, setting realistic expectations from marriage, identifying potential conflicts, promoting emotional readiness and educating about legal and social aspects. Later during the same meeting, an internal complaints committee was also constituted in the DC’s office in conformity with sexual harassment of women at workplace (prevention, prohibition and redressal) act, 2013.
The committee will look into complaints and provide redressal mechanism regarding complaints of sexual harassment of employees and strive to create a safe working environment for the female employees as well as promote gender equality.
The meeting was attended by PRI members, representatives of women welfare society, female officers and others.
