Public Interest Litigation (PIL) Filed On Tennis Court Issue; Hearing on Monday

ITANAGAR: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed at the Itanagar Permanent Bench of Gauhati High Court on Friday by social activist Nabam Serbang, challenging the allotment of Tennis Court near Indira Gandhi Park here for construction of state BJP office.

The BJP-led state government has drawn flags from the public in social media platforms for allegedly allotting the Tennis Court to the Saffron party. Various organizations including Arunachal Civil Society (ACS), Arunachal Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC), National People’s Party Youth Wing and likeminded people mostly youths have already objected the construction of BJP office at the Tennis Court, which is meant for public utilities.

Commenting about the filing of PIL, Serbang informed that Tennis Court area, where BJP office is being constructed, comes under forest park and for public utilities. Allotment of said land for construction of BJP office or any other private structure will directly affect the common people, he said. “I have therefore filed a PIL against the state government on allotment of said land for construction of BJP office,” informed Serbang, adding that the Court has accepted the PIL and it will be heard by the double bench on Monday next.

On possibilities of influence on the case, Serbang exuded hope that the Court will give fair judgment considering the genuineness of the matter.

“Tennis Court is a very important place in the entire Capital Complex. Public need this open space for various activities apart from democratic movements,” he stated, adding allotment of the said land for construction of such structure is against the interest of the public.
