ITANAGAR: To contain coronavirus, the common public must play a proactive role like the Health and other frontline workers, said the Director of Tomo Riba Institute of Health & Medical Science (TRIHMS), Dr Moji Jini.

Speaking to the reporters in an online conference, Dr Jini pointed out that unless the public strictly adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and take precautions, the virus will spread. Therefore, the public should wear masks, maintain social distancing, clean hands and isolate themselves from one another as much as possible to be safe and bring Arunachal to a zero-infection state, he added.

"The virus does not spread until it finds a host to multiply. Therefore, only by cooperating with the Health and frontline workers, and following the SOPs will ensure the greater safety of our people," he said.

Dr. Jini added that the need for another lockdown will not be necessary if the public acts responsibly by following the SOPs.

He warned that even if the State manages to contain the spread of pandemic now, there will always be a chance of the virus spreading again.

When questioned as to the steps being planned by the Health department in such a situation, Dr. Jini said that the only way is to change the approach according to the situation. "We can't stop people entering the State even if we become a virus-free State. There is always the possibility of someone coming from other States or countries, bringing back the virus," he said.

Therefore, the only way to fight the pandemic is taking precautions, following the timely given SOPs and changing the approach to fight the pandemic according to the situation, he added.

On the sidelines, he also informed that 11 Health workers from TRIHMS were detected positive, among which three were symptomatic.

Despite the prevailing situation, doctors and nurses are still on the ground to fight against the pandemic, he said adding, "It is part of our duty."
