Refrain from violence, Police tells agitators during Legislative Assembly session

ITANAGAR: To ensure the safety of people and damage of public property during the ensuing three day of the fifth session of seventh Legislative Assembly session which starts on August 27, the State Police department has mobilized sufficient police forces in the State capital.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) - Law & Order, Chukhu Apa said that according to the police sources, there are information of anti-social elements planning large-scale violence to disrupt the State Assembly session.

"We are also getting information that they have pledged to repeat the PRC incident of last year. But the police department and the district administration is prepared to contain such a situation," he said.

When asked to be specific with the groups or individual planning to do so, IGP refused to disclose the name of the group or particular person.

"I won't be able to disclose their names but their intention is clear to create tension during the Assembly session," he said, requesting the bandh callers to refrain from any kind of violence to disrupt the state peace.

He said that in a democratic setup, though people have rights, they don't have absolute rights. Peaceful demonstrations and rally are acceptable but resorting to violence and taking law into own hands are absolutely unacceptable, he added.

The IGP also informed that while the Police department has mobilized internal security, the para-military forces will also be deployed during the days the Assembly session will be held.

He further requested the public to refrain from circulating provocative messages, false narratives and video clippings in various social media platforms, warning that such activities will invite legal action.

"For the first time, the Police department will be using high tech to record the situation during the Assembly session," he said, adding, "The officers on duty will be having body cameras and photographers as well as videographers will be deployed."

He further said that if someone is found violating the law, legal actions against such people under the IPC, Arunachal Pradesh Property (Prevention of damages & loss) Act 2020 and Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 2014.

Meanwhile, he also assured the safety of media persons covering the Assembly session.

CASES REGISTERED IN PRC CASE: When asked about the update on the cases registered during the PRC issue last year, the IGP informed that while around 10 registered cases have been transferred to the Special Investigating Team (SIT), and nine have been charge-sheeted and the trial process will start soon. Last year, three youths died and many others were injured during the violent stirs over the issue of granting PRC to six non-APST (Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe) communities settled in the State.
