ITANAGAR: A court in Arunachal Pradesh's East Siang district has convicted a retired police officer for sexually assaulting his domestic help for several years and sentenced him to three years of rigorous imprisonment. The District and Sessions Court at Pasighat convicted Brinar Pait, a retired sub-inspector of the state police, on Tuesday and sentenced him to three years of imprisonment under Section 8 of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act for sexually assaulting his domestic help on various occasions, officials from the district said. The distressing case unravelled a disturbing pattern of abuse dating back to 2012, wherein Pait subjected the victim to molestation and sexual assault. The victim, who had been living with the police officer since childhood due to the tragic loss of her parents, was employed as domestic help in his household.
Throughout this ordeal, Pait resorted to threats and intimidation, even going so far as brandishing a pistol on one occasion, in a bid to silence the victim and prevent her from disclosing the incidents to his wife or others. Despite facing daunting challenges, the victim displayed remarkable courage by making several attempts to extricate herself from her abuser. The gravity of the situation came to light on June 29 last year, when the victim, overwhelmed by frustration and despair, managed to escape from her owner's residence. Subsequently, on June 30, 2022, the law enforcement authorities located her, leading to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) and the commencement of legal proceedings against the perpetrator, the officials added.
