ITANAGAR: The Arunachal Pradesh Women's Welfare Society (APWWS) has lauded the important breakthrough made by superintendent of police (SP) Jimmy Chiram and his team in the Techi Meena Lishi murder case.

In a major development, the police had on Friday arrested three more co-accused, namely, Damriet Khoiyang, Kapwang LeteyLowang and Taney Khoiyang in the case from Tirap district.

RoniLishi, Meena's husband and Dathang Suyang (driver) were arrested by the police earlier.

Meena (36) was found dead inside an SUV on November 5 near the Karsingsa block point, around 25km from here. She was seven-months pregnant.

Terming the development as horrifying, the APWWS said, "This is the first-of-its-kind case in the history of Arunachal Pradesh where a husband meticulously pre-planned the murder of his wife and unborn child sending shockwaves across the State." The society demanded that stringent punishment be awarded to all the culprits involved.

The APWWS said, "If the girl with whom the main accused (deceased's husband) is allegedly having an extramarital affair is found to be involved in the case, she must be booked under relevant sections of law and arrested so that such horrific cases are not repeated."

It added that it is also important to find out the reason and motive behind the merciless and inhuman killing of a pregnant woman. The APWWS has also appreciated the Tirap police for nabbing the other three co-accused in the case. The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has also called for a thorough and speedy investigation into the case so that justice is granted to the deceased and her family members. "The State has never witnessed such execution of dangerous and unforeseen crime against women. Every single person involved in the conspiracy and murder must be punished stringently so that such heinous crime is not committed hereafter," said the Congress.

The party said crime and violence against women has been increasing expeditiously in the State in the past few years.

"Abduction, domestic violence, rape, molestation, forced and early marriages have become a common sight in the State. Unaccounted cases of violence and torture generally go under-reported in the state," it said.

The APCC has further called upon the state government to focus more on the rising crime rate against women and enforce laws effectively to end the sufferings which it said the women go through "due to imbalanced practices of customs and disproportionate changing social set up." The government must ensure protection, safety and security to the womenfolk, the party said.
