LONGDING, July 9: Parliamentary Secretary for Power Thangwang Wangham inaugurated the Wancho Cultural Society (WCS) office at Longding in presence of Deputy Comissioner VS Mallik on Sunday here.

Wangham speaking on the occasion rebelled against the famous saying that “We should preserve our culture” and instead propagated to live and practice culture, according to him culture is not a museum specimen to be preserved.

“Culture is the base and without base the nothing can be its place” he said poetically referring to that person who has literally try to forsake the root culture in the verge of modernization.

Wangham remembered the founding members of Wancho Youth Association (WYA) of which he himself was a member, like Lt. Bowang Wangsu, Lt. Wangnam Wangsu and Ex- Minister Hejam Ponglaha.

He recounted their role in eradicating the social evils and taboos like polygamy, tattooing the whole body and the ritual mandating the Wangpan girls to have a shaven head.

“But the modernization spree spearheaded by WYA was misunderstood by the people thereby endangering the very cultural identity of Wanchos. So the WCS were formed to juggle the modernization and preservation of culture at the same time, he added.

He also urged the gathering to guide the youths so that they don’t go wayward and also not to lose the tolerant and welcoming attitude, which is the trademark of Wanchos, towards the outsiders and live in harmony among all community and tribes of state.

WCS President Manhang Loham highlighted the achievements made by WCS since its inception in 1985. He accepted the fact that WCS spiraled down a bit in the middle years after a thunderous start in the beginning.

“But we’ve been able to overcome all the challenges and has brought WCS to where it is today” he added. He also informed the gathering that WCS has been linked with NERCORMP to work for the cause of Wancho in a more efficient way.
