ITANAGAR: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather warning for several districts of Arunachal Pradesh, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days.

The alert, issued by the Meteorological Centre here, highlights the potential for significant weather-related disruptions between August 1 and August 2, with Papum Pare, Lohit, and West Siang among the most affected districts.

According to the forecast, heavy rainfall in 24 hours is very likely to occur at isolated places in Lohit and West Siang. In Papum Pare, the rainfall intensity could be even higher, with very heavy showers predicted in a 24-hour period.

Thunderstorms and lightning are expected to accompany the rainfall, increasing the risk of associated hazards. The IMD has cautioned that the intense spell of rain may lead to poor visibility, temporary disruption of road traffic due to water-logging, and uprooting of trees, especially in urban and semi-urban areas.

There is a strong likelihood of flooding in low-lying regions and increased chances of landslides, mudslides, and flash floods, particularly in hilly terrain. Infrastructure may also take a hit, with vulnerable structures such as hoardings and temporary shelters at risk of damage. Power and communication lines could be affected by broken tree branches, while standing crops, especially in agricultural and horticultural fields, may suffer damage due to prolonged rain and gusty winds.

Farmers have been advised to delay sowing operations where possible, ensure proper drainage in fields already sown, and use natural mulching material to protect soil and seedbeds.

The IMD also urged the people to avoid travel in flood-prone areas, stay away from landslide-prone zones, and remain indoors during thunderstorms to avoid lightning-related injuries.
