University Soccer League Kicks Off at Rono Hills Campus of Rajiv Gandhi University

ITANAGAR: The much awaited and talked about 3rd University Soccer League (USL) kicked off today at the picturesque Rono Hills campus of Rajiv Gandhi University today. The inaugural ceremony was attended by Yumlam Kaha, Director, Social Justice, and Empowerment & Tribal Affairs as the Chief Guest and Dr. Nani Tamang Jose, RGU’s Registrar in charge as the Guest of the Honour.

Hosts of officials - senior administrative officials, Faculty members, and students joined the inaugural session. USL is an annual interactive event which aims to bring together students, faculty members, and staffs. Altogether 21 teams from various departments, branches, and cells of the university are participating.

The tournament which is being played on a rubber league mode shall have its grand finale match on October 11. The chief guest and guest of honor spoke about the essence of the game and encouraged the gathering to be disciplined in every part of the game.

Kaha in his speech highlighted the flagship schemes for the welfare of the tribal people launched and being undertaken by the governments at the center and state. Among others, Chairman of the officers club Dr. Gibji Nimasow and convenor of the tournament Pitam Jomoh also spoke on the inaugural programme which was attended amongst others by Finance Officer-in-charge of RGU Dr. David Pertin, HoD Commerce Prof. Otem Padung, Deputy Director of APEDA Bengia Tado, Vice-President AAPSU Dr. Tayuk Sonam, and scores of soccer lovers.

The inaugural match was played between the defending champions, the Dept of Commerce team and RGU Research Scholars team. With a goal apiece from Mitin Tayeng and Manthan Chitan the Commerce team edged past the Research Scholars team 2-0 in an action-packed match witnessed by scores of supporters and spectators.
