Workshop on climate change & its impact on society

ITANAGAR: The State Remote Sensing Application Centre (SRSAC), Itanagar with the Department of Forestry, NERIST organized a one-day awareness programme on “Climate Change and Natural Resources Depletion Impacts on Socio-economy of Arunachal Himalaya: and Indigenous and Technological Approach” at Kendriya Vidyalaya here on Friday.

The programme was supported by the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi and was attended by around 60 participants including students.

Joint Director and Principal Investigator SRSAC, Liagi Tajo informed that the programme is for local people of different age-groups representing various sectors of the society to sensitize about climate change scenario and collect their views to identify the major causes for bioresources depletion and to suggest suitable remedial measures through applied research, monitoring, evaluation and rigorous planning by the authorities.

Director of NERIST HS Yadav emphasized upon minimizing the misuse of natural resources; how many acres of land are deforested due to the growing needs of people, emission of toxic gases as a result of pollution and also highlighted various approaches for facilitating fresh water, sustainable precise farming and lack of storage facilities.

He also discussed on the climate change impact on the melting of ice sheets, global warming issues, greenhouse gas emissions, implications of ice floating and its impacts on aquatic flora and fauna, micro-organisms. He told about various suitable conservation measures to mitigate the climate change impacts.

Dr OP Tripathi, highlighted upon the climate change needs to be addressed precisely from local to landscape level. He discussed about the evidences for rapid climate change like the global temperature rise, glacial retreats, ocean acidification and other extreme events.
