Workshop on plant genetics resources conservation held in Arunachal Pradesh

ROING: The National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Balek and Directorate of Agriculture, organized a plant genetics resources conservation awareness workshop here on Tuesday.
Over 120 farmers from nearby villages, including different self-help groups, participated in the workshop. Appreciating the effort of the NBPGR, ZPC Obang Ngupok suggested that the farmers of the state should make efforts in conservation of endangered species like Mishmi Tita, Paris polyphylla and develop the orchards of horticultural plants like litchi, mango, rubber, etc. so that economic status of the people can be enhanced.
Meanwhile, ICAR- NBPGR Principal Scientist Dr KC Bhatt informed that due to several factors, the varieties of local crops, wild economic plants, including medicinal and aromatic plants, are disappearing gradually from different diversity rich areas, including Arunachal Pradesh. He said, Arunachal Pradesh being one of the hotspots of biodiversity, the wealth of plant genetics resources available in the north-eastern hill region needs to be considered and the farmers of the region should be made aware of the importance of plant genetic resources and need for their conservation.
