Rain Prediction: Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal to Face Heavy Pre-Monsoon Rainfall in Weekend

The torrential rains that have been falling in Northeast India since the beginning of the week are expected to worsen over the next few days, with heavy showers projected for the area till next Monday, June 7.

The increase of moist, lower-level southwesterly winds flowing in from the Bay of Bengal, according to the India Climatic Department (IMD), would generate meteorological conditions conducive to heavy rainfall throughout the region.

As a result, extensive rains are forecast for the Northeast during the next five days. Furthermore, scattered heavy rain is forecast for Arunachal Pradesh from Friday to Sunday, Assam and Meghalaya from Friday to Monday, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on Saturday and Sunday.

The Weather Channel's forecast team predicts a 5-day rainfall total of up to 150 mm, with more than 250 mm likely in isolated areas. Meteorologists warn that rain in such locations might cause floods.

In light of these projections, the IMD has issued a yellow watch for the aforementioned states for the next three days, encouraging inhabitants to be mindful of the local weather condition.

The rain will also lower the temperature in the region, with cooler-than-normal daytime temperatures on the horizon throughout this predicted period.

Meanwhile, a rainstorm has been raging across the Northeast since the beginning of this week. Even yesterday, between the morning and afternoon hours of Thursday, June 3, rainfall was reported in most parts of Arunachal Pradesh, as well as in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.

Overall, all of the aforementioned states have had a rainy start to the month of June. All northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh (36.4 mm), Assam (37.3 mm), Meghalaya (88.5 mm), Nagaland (18.8 mm), Manipur (14.4 mm), Mizoram (20 mm), and Tripura (39.9 mm)—received significant precipitation during June 1-3.

The seasonal precipitation the region is anticipated to record once the monsoon comes in the Northeast, however, is likely to be below normal, despite the country as a whole seeing a slightly wetter monsoon season this year, according to the IMD's latest long-range projection.
