GUWAHATI: Amid the continuous rainfall in different regions of northeast India, the IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) has predicted even more severe downpours and thunderstorms in the region for the upcoming 5 days.

According to the latest update by the weather channel, heavy precipitation is expected in several northeastern states mainly the isolated areas.

As per IMD prediction, strong and moist southwestern winds continue to blow in from the Bay of Bengal and onto the region in the northeast.

Under its influence, the areas across Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and the northeastern state of Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh are likely to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning for the upcoming 5 days.

During the same period, the states like Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur are expected to experience isolated to scattered rainfall along with thunderstorms.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Isolated heavy showers might hit Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh as per the weather forecast by IMD.

Assam and Meghalaya will witness the same weather condition until Tuesday 12 April and the isolated regions in the states are likely to see very heavy rainfall between Saturday 9 April and Monday 11 April.

In its concern over the weather in the 5 aforementioned states, the department has issued a yellow alert for the next 24 hours.

Moreover, the states of Assam and Meghalaya for 3 days i.e. Saturday, Sunday and Monday are put on orange alert which suggests getting prepared for rough weather.

Notably, the maximum temperature in Assam and Meghalaya has dropped below normal over the last week with continuous rainfall.

However, as per the IMD indication, there will be no major changes in the upcoming days but rainfall is even more likely to get extreme in the region.

It may be mentioned that since the beginning of the pre-monsoon period in the month of March this year, the rainfall in northeastern areas has varied from state to state.

The states of Assam, Sikkim and Manipur have recorded precipitation above the average from the beginning of March till Thursday 7 April.
