NAGAON: The 10th special Raha annual session of Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) concluded on Sunday at Jungalbolohu Samannoi Khetra at Batomari Pothar in Raha in Nagaon district. This special session of AXX marked an alarm or a stiff warning to the BJP-led alliance governments at the Centre as well as in the State against their combined initiatives to amend the Citizenship Bill in the Parliament. AXX in a sense made a sensitized agenda against the proposed Bill and was able to bring all tribes and communities of the State, irrespective to religion, under a single umbrella through this special session. As a consequence, no representative of the BJP-led alliance government could gather the courage to attend the special Raha session although some of them were invited to the session.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, State Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and State Education Minister Siddartha Bhattacharya were invited to the special Raha session by the AXX but none of them attended the session this time which has raised many questions among people.
On the closing day, in memory of Dr Pramud Chandra Bhattacharya, a special conclave ‘Zilikabo Luitore Par’ was held among various indigenous tribal student organizations of the State at its main stage where around 50 ethnic students organizations took part and challenged the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019. The founder general secretary of United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), Anup Chetia inaugurated the conclave and said that if the bill was somehow passed by the government, the power of the State would be snatched away from the indigenous Assamese people by the foreigners and Assam within 30 years would become the second Tripura in the Northeast.
Strongly opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, Chetia said, “We will not let the saffron party pass the Bill in the Parliament at any cost and from this platform of AXX we want to announce that we will never accept the Bill.”
In the conclave, representatives of student organizations like Tai Ahom Chatra Santha, Sonowal Kochari Chatra Santha, Dimasa Chatra Santha, Gurkha Chatra Santha, Karbi Chatra Santha, Motok Chatra Santha and Tiwa Chatra Santha were present and they declared ‘Brajaninad’ against the initiatives of the government to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
