12-hour Assam Bandh against BTC up-gradation affects life in Bongaigaon

Bongaigaon: The 12-hour Assam bandh called by several organizations, including All Koch-Rajbanshi Students’ Union, All Bodoland Minority Students’ Union, and Santhal Students’ Union, opposing against up-gradation of Bodoland Territorial Council, affected normal life in Bongaigaon.

All the markets remained closed and vehicles remained off the road. No unwanted incident occurred but some picketers burnt tyres on the main road of Bongaigaon town. Gokul Barman, secretary of AKRSU, said that the government had proved that it only understood the language of the gun.

“Several communities, including Koch-Rajbongshi and Adivasi, have been agitating for their rights since long but the government never paid interest to resolve these issues. By forming BTR today it showed interest to only one community which has a population of 20 percent only in the BTC region. Moreover, we came to know that the area of BTR will be increased which is intolerable. We oppose it strongly. On January 28, all the organizations will sit and discuss our further course of action against BTR,” he said.
