13-year old student killed in a road mishap at Kumarikata

Tamulpur: A 13-year old student was killed on the 127(D) Rangia-Tamulpur-Bhutan international link road at Kumarikata when a Bhutan truck hit the student from the front in front of Don Bosco School, Kumarikata under Tamulpur Police Station in the district of Baksa.

The accident took place at about 7.45 AM when the student was going to her school on a bicycle. A Bhutan truck bearing registration number BP-48A-0548 was moving towards Samdrup Jhankhar of eastern Bhutan and when the truck reached in front of the school, the truck hit the student and as a result, the student died on the spot. The deceased student has been identified as Kritika Pradhan, daughter of Hemo Pradhan of village Jogeshpur under Kumarikata Police Outpost under Baksa district. She was a student of Class VI of Kumarikata Don Bosco School.

After the accident, local people gathered on the spot. Nipon Gogoi, in-charge of Kumarikata Police Outpost, also rushed to the spot with a police team and recovered the body. Many students from various schools of the locality gathered at the spot and staged a demonstration and blocked the Rangia-Tamulpur-Bhutan international link road for three hours, demanding protection of school students as well as the common people. They shouted slogans seeking justice for Kritika Pradhan and to provide adequate compensation to the victim’s family.

The protesters also compelled Bhutan ambulance and Bhutan vehicles to return from Kumarikata. Later on, Sujit Buglary, SDO (C) of Tamulpur, Asima Kalita, SDPO Tamulpur, and officer-in-charge of Tamulpur police station, Asim Bora also rushed to the spot and observed the situation. After a discussion with the civil administration and police administration, the protesters withdrew their protest and opened the road.

Due to the violation of traffic rules, road accidents occur frequently on the Rangia-Tamulpur- Bhutan road. The local public demanded necessary action against those motor vehicles which violate traffic rules and steps against the drivers and the owners of these vehicles.
