LAKHIMPUR: The three-day long programme of the 14th session of the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) from November 11 to November 13 concluded with success. The event was organized under the auspices of Harmoti regional unit of AASU at the playground of Harmoti Higher Secondary School under the district.

On the second day, the main agenda of the event commenced with the unfurling of the AASU flag by convener Sanjib Konwar. It was followed by Swahid Tarpan, inaugurated by conveners Kamala Sarmah, Simanta Neog, Faridur Rahman, Tultul Bhorali. Then the first session of the delegates' meeting was inaugurated by AASU organizing secretary Pulok Borah. It was followed by a symposium on a topic— The prospect of agriculture, industry and commerce in Lakhimpur district and the duties of students. Internationally acclaimed innovator Padma Shri Dr. Uddhab Kumar Bhorali and principal of Panigaon OPD College-cum-economist Dr. Suresh Kumar Dutta took part in the symposium as resource persons. In the evening, a get-together of the fresh and former members of the AASU, second session of the delegates' meeting was held.

On the concluding day, a cultural convention was organized, wherein many cultural groups, representing the indigenous communities of the native State and neighbouring State of Arunachal Pradesh, showcased their colourful culture. Popular actors Siddhartha Sarmah, Deepjyoti Keot, Sumki Kachari took part in the cultural convention.

On the other hand, the open public meeting was held from 4pm with Lakhimpur district of AASU chief convener Sanjib Konwar in the chair. It was inaugurated by Dr. Surajit Bhuyan, the principal of Lakhimpur Girls College. AASU Chief Adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya attended the programme as chief guest while president Dipanka Kumar Nath was present as special guest of honour. In his lecture, Dipanka Kumar Nath explained the history of the AASU— how the largest students' organization of the State has been working relentlessly to resolve the burning issues since its inception.

"AASU has been fighting against all the threats to the State without any compromise and it will be done in the same way in future too," Dipanka Kumar Nath affirmed. He asserted that the National Education Policy had been implemented in the State but it had not been implemented in a systematic way. In this connection, he demanded the State Government to initiate adequate steps in order to secure the future of the students by strengthening the Education Department.

"The government has not appointed teachers in the colleges since 1992 by creating new posts. We have been reiterating our demands to resolve the major issues of the Education Department for 25 years. But the government did not pay attention to them", he added while highlighting the problems in the education sector of the State.

AASU general secretary Sankarjyoti Baruah took part in the meeting as appointed speaker. Sankarjyoti Baruah demanded the State government to set up a college and a hospital at Harmoti, which is the commercial centre of Lakhimpur district. In the same programme, Padma Shri Dr. Uddhab Kumar Bhorali released the souvenir named Aai Asomi. North East Students' Organization (NESO) coordinator Pritam Sonam, Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union general secretary Tobam Dai, AJYCP assistant general secretary Sourabh Das and many other dignitaries from several students' organization of the State took part in the meeting and delivered lecture. In the event, the Lakhimpur district unit of AASU was constituted with Simanta Neog as president and Swaraj Sankar Gogoi as general secretary.
