MANGALDAI: Synchronizing with the nationwide celebration of the 152nd Gandhi Jayanti, a good number of citizens, women activists and students joined the celebration organized by Darrang district administration at Gandhi Smriti Udyan on Saturday. Subhalaxmi Deka marked the beginning of the celebration by traditionally lighting a lamp and offering floral tribute at the memorial where the ashes of Mahanta Gandhi was kept in 1948. She also inaugurated the function.

Earlier singers Pranjal Sarma and Rinti Moni Deka performed the Ramdhun and a bhajan while retired teacher Tarun Chandra Sarma and Moulana Sheikh Farid Rizvi chanted the Gita and the Quran. Mukul Chandra Deka and HOD of Chemistry of Mangaldai College Kamala Kanta Borah took part in the celebration and talked about the life and works of Mahatma Gandhi and the relevance of his ideologies in present society. Additional Deputy Commissioner Pallabi Kachari, Sub Divisional Officer Jonti Deka and mediaperson Bhargab Kumar Das also took part in the celebration. In the function, the district administration offered uniforms to twelve cleaners of Mangaldai Municipality Board.

TINSUKIA: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the Margherita Municipal Board (MBB) celebrated the 'Safai Mitra Samman Samaroh' in the office premises of the board, as a part of the 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav,' under the supervision of Siddhartha Sonowal, Executive Officer, MBB. The program was attended by Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma along with the Safai Mitras, students of Margherita College, self help groups of Margherita town and other staff of MBB. Homage was paid to the 'Father of the Nation' on his 152nd birth anniversary and the Safai Mitras were also felicitated in the event that culminated the 4-day event which began on September 29.

A special exhibition "Waste to Art Exhibition" was organised on Friday, wherein items made of waste materials were displayed and winners of the exhibits were encouraged with prizes. Other programs such as 'Kachara Alag Karo,' a door to door awareness campaign, 'Saarvjanik Shauchalaya Safai Abhiyan,' a cleanliness drive was also conducted in collaboration with the educational institutions, self help groups and other locals of the town.

BONGAIGAON: Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) celebrated Gandhi Jayanti and Swachh Bharat Diwas 2021 on Saturday at the district library, Bongaigaon. On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of India's independence, the Ministry of Jal Shakti initiated various activities under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav from September 15 to October 2.

PHED Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass along with the Commissioner & Secretary PHED cum Mission Director Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin and Jal Jeevan Mission, Assam, Akashdeep, Deputy Commissioner Bongaigaon Dr M S Laxmi Priya and other officials from Swachh Bharat Mission and Jal Jeevan Mission and PRI members were present at the event. The event started with Shradhanjali to Mahatma Gandhiji at Mahatma Gandhi Statue situated in Bongaigaon.

This was followed by flagging off of the waste collection vehicles by PHED Minister along with the Commissioner & Secretary cum Mission Director, SBM-G and JJM Akashdeep along with the state and district officials of SBM-G and JJM at the District Library premises, Bongaigaon. Best 3 films from Swachhata Filmo Ka Amrit Mahotsav nominated from Assam were screened at the venue to celebrate the theme of Swachhata.

DEMOW: Swachh Bharat Mission (U) in Association with DAY NULM under Sivasagar Municipal Board celebrated Gandhi Jayanti and Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav on Saturday at the conference Hall of Sivasagar Municipal Board. The programme was attended by Putul Ghorpholia, Headmistress of Nemuguri Gyanjyoti High School, Rajib Chetia, Assistant Executive Engineer of Sivasagar Municipal Board, Mirajuddin Ahmed, City Project Manager of DAY NULM Sivasagar besides the staff of Sivasagar Municipal Board and NULM and women SHG and ALF members. As a part of the programme, a rally on cleanliness by DAY NULM SHG/ALF members was taken out and a cleanliness drive was also undertaken with the active participation of SHG and ALF members of DAY NULM. Besides, three Safai Mitras were felicitated for their exceptional service during pandemic COVID-19.
