DIBRUGARH: Development is impossible without self-interest. However, in most cases, both personal and collective interests are intertwined. Even if there is no personal gain, there is a sense of self-satisfaction involved. Along with this, a spirit of sacrifice is also necessary because 'I am because you are.'

These remarks were made by Dr Jiten Hazarika, Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University, as the chief guest at the 15th Central Foundation Day celebration of Karunadhara Nyas, hosted by the Dibrugarh District Committee of the trust on February 12 in Dibrugarh. In his speech, Dr Hazarika praised the welfare activities carried out by Karunadhara Nyas and urged the younger generation to get involved in such initiatives.

The event took place at the 'Auniati Satra Auditorium' in Kacharibari on Mankota Road, Dibrugarh, in the presence of over 150 kind-hearted individuals from Mangaldai, Guwahati, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Duliajan, Dergaon, and Tinsukia.

Delivering a lecture on 'Social Concerns for the Specially Abled,' Dr Sanjib Kakati, Principal of Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH), emphasized that if everyone contributes from their own field, it would be a true act of social responsibility towards specially-abled individuals.

He noted that the number of specially-abled individuals in society today is relatively low. To prevent disabilities in future generations, he announced that a new center for prenatal diagnosis and treatment would soon be established at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH).

Explaining the objectives of the event, Dr Nareshwar Sharma, Secretary of Karunadhara Nyas, provided a brief overview of the organization's activities over the past 14 years. He stated that a total of Rs 4.73 crore has been disbursed as financial assistance to 2,718 individuals through public donations. Additionally, Karunadhara has implemented several schemes for the specially-abled across different regions. Two books, 'Aparajeyo' and 'Mon,' have also been published to express their thoughts and experiences. The event began with a welcome speech by Joint Secretary Ratan Hazarika and was moderated by Executive President Jyotishankar Chaliha.

Speaking on the occasion, President of Karunadhara Nyas Pratul Phukan stated that Karunadhara is an initiative by the people, for the people. He emphasized that the organization continuously strives to revive the diminishing sense of compassion in society and urged everyone to participate in this mission.

In his address, Dr Pronoy Phukan( poet), President of Karunadhara Dibrugarh District Committee, stated that Assam has over 1 million specially-abled individuals who require a sensitive and compassionate approach. He urged everyone to extend their support to these individuals through Karunadhara.

The event also featured remarks from Shekhar Mazumdar from Mangaldai, who shared his views. The event, which began with the theme song of Karunadhara, also honoured two welfare organizations from Dibrugarh, 'Pratishruti Cancer and Palliative Trust' working towards cancer awareness and prevention and 'Moran Blind School' an institution for visually impaired children. Both organizations received certificates of appreciation, mementos, traditional Assamese gamosas, and cheques of Rs 25,000 each.

Dr Ruby Kataki, a trustee of Karunadhara, anchored the program. The event also featured mesmerizing performances, including flute recital by visually-impaired radio-approved artist Ashwini Saikia and modern song performance by Sulakshana Kaushik.

The event was attended by notable personalities, including Trustee Rupali Kalita, Joint Secretary of the Dibrugarh District Joint Secretary Nakul Khound, Treasurer Samir Kumar Sharma, and many other dignitaries from Dibrugarh. At the same event, Achitpur Tea Estate donated Rs 10,000 to Karunadhara.
