BOKAJAN: With the last day of filing nomination for the 13th KAAC polls on Monday, candidates of all contesting political parties, including Independents, submitted their nominations for the election scheduled for June 8. A total of 165 candidates filed their nomination in as many as 26 constituencies with a potential strength of 7,03,298 voters across 906 polling stations in the two administrative districts of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong.

Apart from BJP and INC candidates, a good number of candidates from several other political parties, including ASDC, CPI(ML), APHLC and Independents, have filed nominations for the ensuing poll. Interestingly, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has also for the first time fielded candidates for contesting the KAAC polls.

The BJP, which has been on a winning streak in Assam, is confident of another easy win in the ensuing polls of KAAC. Unlike the previous election, the BJP has this time provided party ticket to the Bengali and tea tribe communities, which had remained a long-time demand and is seen as a political masterstroke of the party in the region ahead of polls.

Notably, several sitting EMs and MACs were denied party ticket by the BJP as many new names surfaced in the list of candidates released by the party on Sunday. Those denied party ticket include KAAC speaker Longki Timing from Borjan, EM Jagat Sing Ingti from Sarupathar, MAC Mukut Mahanta from Deopani, EM Prodip Diphusa from Dhansiri, EM Ratan Teron from Lumbajong, EM Pradeep Rongpi from Chinthong, MAC Tarendra Brahma from Langhin, MAC Ramsing Timung from Langfer and EM Khongsing Rongpi from Howraghat.

The KAAC consists of a 30-member council of which 26 are elected and four are nominated with a view to provide representation to communities who constitute a considerable population in the KAAC administered areas. It is noteworthy that out of the 26 constituencies, 9 constituencies under the Hamren sub-division will be under the control of the Deputy Commissioner, West Karbi Anglong, 10 constituencies under the Diphu sub-division will be under the control of the Deputy Commissioner, Karbi Anglong and the remaining 7 constituencies under the Bokajan sub-division will be under the control of SDO(C), Bokajan.
