Silchar: During the last 24 hours there has been record rise of 196 COVID-19 cases in Cachar. Of them 37 are from Assam Rifles and the rest civilians. Suman Choudhury said they have been admitted in different treatment centres of Silchar Medical College and Hospital, S M Dev Civil Hospital, Foreigners' office, Rangpur, Chibitiabichia Model Hospital and makeshift Borkhola Model College with 300 bed capacity. In the meantime, all the mediapersons, both print and electronic, following their contact with journalist Biswakalyan Purkayastha who tested positive, went for COVID- 19 tests on the advice of the district administration. All of them tested negative.

More and more positive cases have put extreme pressure on the health structure of the district. In addition, 1000 bed capacity make shift COVID care centre has to be raised in this town within 10 days and the bed capacity of SMCH to be raised to another 200. Questions are being raised how the much strained doctors, nurses and paramedical staff can take further strains to attend to the mounting load of patients. There is no talk of increasing the number of medical and paramedical staff as well the required tools and equipments for better management. Moreover, the availability of land in this town for 1000 bed capacity care centre is less in view of the densely populated areas. The emphasis should be more now on how to control the rapidly increasing COVID-19 cases, pointed out Dr Debidas Dutta, former Principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
