KOJRAJHAR: Heavy rains in the past few days have caused floods in various parts of the Kokrajhar district. However, the flood situation in Kokrajhar district has improved with the decrease in rainfall in the district since Friday morning.

The water levels of eight rivers in the district - Sonkosh, Madati, Gurufela, Gangia, Langa, Saralbhanga, Gaurang and Champabati have decreased during this period but various parts of the Kokrajhar district are seenstill under water. Thus, the Kokrajhar district administration is keeping a close watch on the situation and is taking necessary flood management activities.

As directed by Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka, all officers including Civil Sub-Divisional Officers of Gossaigaon and Parbatjhara, other Additional Deputy Commissioners, senior Police Officers, Circle Officers and Circle Officers (attached) are visiting the flood-hit areas and arranging rescue operations and distribution of relief materials to the flood affected helpless people.

Similarly, officers and employees of departments concerned like Agriculture, Public Works, Panchayat and Rural Development, Education, Irrigation, Public Health Engineering, etc. are also visiting the flood-affected areas to assess the damage and take necessary steps for restoration of structures. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Fire and Emergency Services are also conducting rescue operations. The health department is also frequently visiting the flood-hit areas and conducting health camps at relief camps by forming 14 medical teams with doctors and para-medical staff. Relief materials like rice, porridge, sweet oil, salt, jaggery, sira, candles, biscuits, triple, drinking water etc. are also being provided to the flood victims by the district administration. In addition, nutritious food is being provided to children and breastfeeding mothers and child-friendly corners and breastfeeding corners have been arranged in the relief camps. The Veterinary and Animal Husbandry department is also providing green fodder to the flood-affected livestock.

In view of that, the Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka held a review meeting with the Sub-Divisional Magistrates, Additional Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, Circle Officers, Circle Officers (Attached) and officers concerned of various departments on Thursday night. She directed all the officers to visit the flood-affected areas to ensure that the people do not face any difficulties in food, medical treatment, drinking water etc.

In Kokrajhar district, a total of 86,883 people of 258 villages with 51 in Bagaribari, 41 in Bhawraguri, 46 in Dotma, 77 in Gossaigaon and 43 in Kokrajhar revenue circles were affected by the floods. The district administration has so far opened 28 relief distribution centres and 64 relief camps where presently 25,506 inmates are taking shelter. As such, the flood has also affected 2,025.77 hectares of crop area, 3,870 livestock, 10 houses, 8 schools and 6 roads/bridges/culverts.
