SILCHAR, Jan 16: The long wait is over. Along with the rest of the country, mega exercise for administering COVID vaccination to target group of health and anganwadi workers in the first phase was kicked off in all the three districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi on Saturday. This is a no doubt a revolutionary move at the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fight against the pandemic disease which has taken in its toll innumerable lives. It continues to spread its killer dragnet, of course, in a sporadic manner. According to Sudip Jyoti Das, Joint Director of Health Services, Cachar, of the 11,790 identified in the first phase, 109 persons were given vaccination in SMCH (63) and Civil Hospital (46) of this town on the inaugural day. This will be carried on in the 25 centres spread over the seven assembly constituencies of the district.

The health and anganwadi workers took dose of vaccination in the specified room thereafter rested in waiting room and then taken to observation room. Preventive measures were on to take care of vaccinated persons in case of developing any abnormality in the body. Any person going unwell will be admitted in hospital. The vaccinated person will be given another dose of vaccination after 28 days. After the first group of health and anganwadi workers, persons above 50 and others will be brought in the process.

In the border district of Karimganj, the Joint Director of Health Services, Dr Arun Kumar Daityari, was the first to get vaccinated in order to give confidence to others that it is safe and with the cooperation of all, the country will be free of COVID-19. On the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Ambamuthan MP was present. 100 persons were given vaccination on the first day. The centre of vaccination today was Civil Hospital. Of the target group of 8,234 persons in the first phase, 5,540 health line and 2,720 anganwadi workers including 2,720 frontline warriors will be vaccinated. Persons below 18 are not eligible for vaccination. Symptoms of fever and pain might occur after vaccination. A team of district health department specially constituted for the purpose is keeping a close watch on the post vaccination process.

According to Hailakandi District Immunisation Officer Dr KTS Rangmei and Joint Director of Health Services, Dr Ashutosh Burman, 60 target group of persons as per nationwide guidelines were vaccinated in the Civil Hospital to begin with. In fact, the target is to vaccinate 100 persons each day with foolproof measures in all the five development blocks. In the first phase, 1926 health workers will be vaccinated.
