GUWAHATI: Three people died in a road accident that occurred in the Nazirakhat region near Sonapur on the National Highway 37. The three were driving in a private vehicle from Guwahati towards Nagaon. The vehicle involved in the accident was a Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire numbered AS 01 BH 9714. The vehicle hit a parked truck at high speeds leading to the death of the driver and two passengers in the vehicle on the spot. The incident took place at around 2 AM on Friday.

The deceased have been identified as Babon Haloi, Gautam Banik and Subul Das. Subon Das belonged to Nagaon, while Babon Haloi and Gautam Banik both hailed from Guwahati.

Another accident was reported late on Wednesday night when a drunk cab driver hit a parked sedan near the Zoo Road region of the city. The passenger of the cab sustained minor injuries in this incident and medical attention was provided immediately.

Assam witnessed a total of 643 road accidents across the state during this year's Durga Puja celebrations, as revealed by statistical data issued by Mrityunjoy 108 Emergency Ambulance service.

Emergency calls for assistance during these accidents were registered in the course of five days of Puja celebrations, which began on October 1.

According to the data provided by Mrityunjoy, Kamrup Rural this year registered the highest number of accidents with 75 cases, followed by Sonitpur with 53 cases and Nagaon with 46 cases.

On October 5, during idol immersion on the last day of Durga Puja, also known as Dashami, the highest number of road accidents were recorded in the districts of Nagaon and Darrang with 15 registered cases, followed by Udalguri with 13 cases and Cachar districts with 12 cases.

Last year, a total of 541 road accidents were recorded during the Durga Puja festivities.
