30 vultures die under mysterious circumstances

TINSUKIA: Death of as many as 30 vultures under mysterious circumstances in Kordoiguri's Dhulijan gaon under Doomdooma Revenue Circle on Monday created desperation among the local villagers and wildlife lovers.

While local environmental activists rescued 13 other sick vultures from the vicinity of the agricultural field, carcass of cattle was also found nearby. The species were identified as critically endangered White Rumped Vulture and Griffon Vulture. It is suspected that they were poisoned to death by miscreants. The wildlife officials, along with veterinary staff, carried the sick birds for treatment and dead vultures for post-mortem examination. As the area lies close to Dibru-Saikhowa National Park, it becomes more concern for local wildlife activists who demanded punishment for the culprits.
