HAFLONG: The 36-hour bandh called by militant outfit Dimasa National Liberation Tribal (DNLT) evoked a mixed response among the people of Dima Hasao as some parts of the district were partially open on Wednesday.

The newly-floated militant outfit on Monday through social media platform called a 36-hour Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong bandh from 5 pm of Tuesday.

Soon the post went viral among the public, creating panic and confusion. On Tuesday by 5 pm, the whole district started to shut down, but it failed to have any impact in the Karbi Anglong district since all institutions and markets in Karbi Anglong were functioning normally.

Dima Hasao SP Mayank Kumar said that the police team was ready to thwart any untoward incident and appealed to the public not to believe in such social media post. However, there was no initiative from the district administration to instill confidence among the public to defy the bandh till 6:30 pm of Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday, both the district administration and NC Hills Autonomous Council through public microphone system made an announcement for opening all government office, schools, transport, markets and private institutions but most of the offices were found partially opened with thin attendance. All the business establishments and schools were closed and vehicles were also off the roads, except the vehicles carrying security personnel.

Students were the worst sufferers as exams are going on and students from far-flung areas were compelled to walk on foot for 6-7 km to appear for the exams though the district administration had provided transportation to them.

Meanwhile, another militant group Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA) (under ceasefire) has issued a letter to the DNLT, to clarify the aims and objective of their group to the government and to the public clearly. They also appealed to the DNLT group to stay united with them.
