Guwahati: Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases in Guwahati, as many as 4 Assam Police personnel tested positive for the virus in Guwahati on Monday, June 29.

According to reports, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Paltan Bazaar Police Station, a sub-inspector (SI) of Birubari outpost, a guard, and driver tested positive for the virus and have been taken to the hospital and observation and treatment. This has been reported at a time when a large number of frontline personnel have been infected with the virus.

Yesterday, G P Singh, the ADGP of Law and Order said that as many as 44 police personnel have so far tested COVID-19 positive in the state. This includes an officer of SP rank. At the same time, Singh informed, 1,127 police personnel have been put under quarantine. He said that "they are all in good health."

The sharp rise in the number of COVID cases in Guwahati has thrown the Government off its guard, which has taken recourse to yet another lockdown to attempt to contain the virus. Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a recent presser opined that if the cases continue to rise at the current rate, we will soon run out of hospital beds to accommodate the patients. Now, the health department has been urging the residents of the city to report to the nearest COVID-19 Counselling Center, where swabs are being collected and tested.

"We've set up facilities for swab collections in 31 COVID Care Centres and 12 hospitals across Guwahati City. I appeal you to come forward to volunteer to give your swabs, should you notice any symptoms that may require ruling out COVID. Let's make #CovidFreeAssam", the Health Minister appealed via Twitter moments earlier.

Assam has so far registered 7,492 virus cases, out of which, 2,390 are active. To date, 11 people from the state have died from complications related to the COVID-19.
