Kokrajhar: Assam education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that 40 new colleges would be constructed in all the 40 constituencies of Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC). Sarma made this announcement in the oath-taking ceremony of the new council of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Along with the 40 new colleges, full-fledged stadiums will also be set up in these constituencies.

On Tuesday, United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) president Pramod Boro was sworn in as the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of BTC at Greenfield, Bodofa Nagar in Kokrajhar. Along with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Gana Suraksha Party (GSP), UPPL will form the next council together.

Addressing the mass, Sarma said that the government of Assam has decided to start the construction of model colleges in Chirang, Tamulpur and Udalguri from the next month.

A new campus of Bodoland University will be constructed in Udalguri district. He also said that a new medical college will be established in Tamulpur.

The government of Assam will further cooperate with the new BTC CEM Pramod Boro to develop the BTC areas, said Sarma.

The oath-taking ceremony saw the presence of Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma and other dignitaries of the state.

Along with Boro, four other members took oath at the swearing-in ceremony. Former NDFB leader Gobinda Ch Basumatry also took oath as the deputy chief of BTC.

The results of recently held BTC elections were out December 12. The former ruling party of BTC, Bodoland Peoples' Front (BPF) led by Hangrama Mohilary, emerged as the single largest party with 17 setas. On the other hand, UPPL won 12 seats and BJP won nine seats. The elections were conducted in two phases on December 7 and 10.
