GUWAHATI: An earthquake of 4.1 on the Richter scale left parts of Assam and Meghalaya shaken on Tuesday, January 21. According to NCS, it occurred at about 12:34 PM IST in the South West Khasi Hills region, at a depth of 10 km.
The residents of Assam and West Bengal felt the tremors. Many evacuated from their homes with alarm. NCS reported that the epicenter of the quake was at 25.34°N latitude and 91.17°E longitude. No reports of casualty were received. Nor was any heavy property damage caused.
Months ago, the NCS had reported that in December 2024, there were as many as 20 earthquakes in Northeast India out of 44 in the entire country. Interestingly, Manipur had the highest number of quakes in India during the month with six recorded incidents and five in Assam.
The NCS operates a National Seismological Network consisting of 166 stations equipped with advanced technology to monitor seismic activity. The network recorded and reported on 129 earthquakes between December 1 and December 31, 2024; most of which occurred in North and Northeast India.
The research further revealed that three of the earthquakes registered had magnitudes of 5.0–5.9, whereas 50% of those recorded at this time had magnitudes of 3.0-3.9. Seismic activity indicates geological dynamics that persist in the region.
