5 Arrested for Bootlegging Elephant Tusks in Barpeta, Assam
GUWAHATI: In a joint police operation by officials and personnel of Howly police station, Barpeta Road police station and 10th Battalion of the CRPF recovered two elephant tusks and arrested 5 persons along with 1 swift desire and 3 mobile phones.
The tusks were discovered around 5.30 pm on Wednesday in the Madulijhar area of Assam's Barpeta district.
In a tweet by DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta stated- "Yesterday two big elephant tusks were discovered in Howly Moutupori Village. Howly and Barpeta Road Police Station collaborated in the operation and so far, five people in possession of tusks have been arrested and the mobile phones along with the vehicle in which they traveling have been impounded".
The vehicle that was seized had a Meghalaya Number plate bearing a registration number ML 05 K 0008.
Last year in August 2020, Chirang Police arrested also and seized two elephant tusks, a suspected animal body parts.
Alen Basumatary of 46 years old was apprehended in an operation led by ASP Prakash Medhi of the Chirang district police. Two elephant tusks measuring ten kilograms, as well as a cell phone and a jacket, and also Chirang DFO Brahmananda Patiri informed the Chirang police department that 60 kilograms of elephant tusk were hidden someplace in Dadagiri.
In another case, elephant ivory weighing 16.962kg was discovered hidden in a truck carrying Assam tea near Siliguri in North Bengal. According to officers from the directorate of revenue intelligence in Assam, the ivory was taken after elephants were killed in the Assam woods and were intended for smuggling to southeast Asian countries via Bangladesh.
