GUWAHATI: Five new MLAs, who were elected in the recently held by-elections, on Thursday took oath as legislators of the Assam Assembly.

Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary administered the oath to BJP MLAs Phanidhar Talukdar, Rupjyoti Kurmi, and Sushanta Borgohain, and ruling alliance United People's Party Liberal's (UPPL) Jiron Basumatary and Jolen Daimary.

On the other hand, while the BJP legislators took the oath in Assamese, the UPPL members read out the oath statement in Bodo.

The swearing-in-ceremony began with the playing of the National Anthem in instrumental form and ended with the pre-recorded singing of the state anthem, "O Mor Aponar Desh".

BJP candidates Talukdar, Kurmi and Borgohain won Bhabanipur, Mariani and Thowra constituencies respectively.

Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Saram took to his official Twitter handle and wrote, "CM Dr @himantabiswa has extended his warm greetings to the newly-elected MLAs who took oath today. He exuded confidence that the new members will work hard for the development of their constituencies."

All three were elected as opposition MLAs during the assembly elections held in March-April this year, but later resigned and joined the saffron party.

Sushanta Borgohain, MLA of Thowra constituency, said that he had taken the challenge, resigned from the Congress party, joined the BJP and won the by-polls.

Meanwhile, several Congress Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the state are in queue to join Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claimed Assam BJP Chief Bhabesh Kalita.

''More will join us in the coming days as several Congress MLAs are in a queue,'' he added. Meanwhile, while countering BJP over the statement made by Kalita, Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah has the saffron party focus on the development of Assam, instead of luring and poaching MLAs of other parties.
