NAGAON: Over 59 candidates from ruling BJP, its partner AGP, opposition Congress, AJP, Aam Aadmi Party, AIUDF and independents are in the fray for 23 seats in Nagaon Municipality Board (NMB) election which is scheduled to be held on March 6.
Among those 59 candidates, 19 are from BJP, 4 from its alliance partner AGP, 20 from the opposition Congress, 4 from AJP, 2 from AIUDF, one from Aam Aadmi party while 9 candidates participated as an independent.
Significantly, among 26 seats in the NMB, three BJP candidates from wards no 8, 10 and 26 have been already declared uncontested winners. Interestingly, the nomination papers of the Congress candidate in ward no 26, was cancelled by the authority concerned after scrutiny and examination. 24 wards of NMB are under Nagaon Sadar constituency while two wards are under Barhampur constituency.
Meanwhile all parties including BJP, AGP, Congress and others intensified their door to door election campaigns at every ward to woo the voters and also focus their issues for the development of their respective wards to be accomplished in the days to come. Local MLA Rupak Sarma intensified the party's campaign among the voters in almost all those 19 wards through roadshows as well as door to door campaign among the voters and left no stone unturned to retain all those seats in the forthcoming civic polls. The ruling BJP alliance parties are in far ahead in the election campaign compared to the other opposition parties. Besides, the opposition Congress has tightened its grip in two minority-dominated wards 12 and 20.
As per views of politically conscious voters as well as political viewers of the town, the ruling BJP and its alliance partner AGP will again dominate in the civic polls as the opposition parties are apparently far behind to convince the voters with the pragmatic issues against the ruling BJP and its alliance partner. Many political viewers claimed it too that the opposition Congress, as well as other parties, had to work hard to restrain the ruling alliance in ward no - 9, 11, 19, 16, 22 as the majority of Hindu voters always play a pivotal role to destine the fate of the winners in those wards.
